Canterbury Baseball Club goes back to its roots in rebrand

Updated: Jul 8, 2020

Canterbury Baseball has gone back to its roots as 'The Blue Machine' in a major rebranding.

The new look is a move back to the club's historical identity as it nears its 100th anniversary.

Between 1927-1979 the club was known only as Canterbury Baseball Club, but in 1980 the club incorporated the "Blue Machine" as its moniker taking the reference from the club victory song which was written only one year prior.

The Blue Machine name stayed with the club for almost three decades until Canterbury's first grade team began referring to themselves as "the Mongrels". This new name was in honour of the late Ray "Mongrel" Furey, who was the former Canterbury Club President.

The club is currently undergoing a complete rebuild in the lead up to their centenary celebrations and in doing so wish to re-connect with the history of the club.

A new badge logo has been designed, incorporating the Blue Machine, referenced as a train, which is wrapped in a cursive C representing Canterbury.

The classic Canterbury cursive script will however remain as the clubs primary logo and will still remain across the front of jerseys and on player hats again sticking with the historical look of the club.

The change in branding reflects the club's deep roots within the community, and we anticipate it will be warmly welcomed by our former players as we look to the future.

"If we're celebrating 100 years of Canterbury baseball, we want to be who we were at the start," said club president Tim Millott.
